Synonymous: Hairy leukoplakia is viral in origin. Please call your dentist or an ear/nose/throat specialist for examination and evaluation.

Leukoplakia: A viral process that opacifies the mucous membranes. Etiology multifactorial, but felt primarily to be viral. Histology of the mucosa is typically not helpfull in identifying the cause. If it resolves usually not something to worry about. Differential is fungal or tumor that does not resolve.

Not viral: There are times that some viral lesions my leave a leukoplakic patches. However, though we do see these types of tongue patches in aids patients, most are not viral. Some can be caused by yeast infection. Some are an auto-immune response, like lichen planis. Some are due to irritations, habits, allergies or medications. Hairy is term for overgrown papillae(buds) on tongue. Dry mouth maybe.
