Fungal infection.: There is a form of fungal infection known as black dot tinea due to the fact that the broken hair at the site of the skin reveals a "black dot". Additionally fungal infection can definitely cause hair loss and progress rapidly if left untreated. Start using an over the counter shampoo containing selenium sulfide, but get to an md to evaluate your scalp and possibly perform a scraping for fungus.
