Need x-ray: Unfortunately, when it comes to bones, x-rays are essential to make a definitive diagnosis particularly when dealing with an elderly person. Please take your mother to the doctor.

An MRI may be needed if the injury involves ligaments or tendons. X-rays can't see such damage. Also, why did your mother fall? Was she dizzy? Please have her evaluated to make sure something else is not going on.
