VP Shunt: Most common procedure is a ventriculoperitoneal shunt where cerebrospinal fluid from the ventricles in the brain are drained with a tube attached to a valve under the skin down to the peritoneal cavity in the abdomen where the fluid is absorbed. Other places for the fluid to be absorbed are the pleural cavity around the lung, or in a part of the heart called the atrium.
