What is the genetic response to environmental pollutants?

Sometimes none: Some environmental pollutants can cause mutations or dna/gene damage. Sometimes they can affect the mechanisms of genetic function by direct interference and/or by epigenetic (non-dna) mechanisms, but often, they do not seem to cause any direct genetic effect. Rathet they may affect one's state of health or disease, not one's genes.
