No.: Chronic pain does not cause bipolar disorder. But severe or chronic pain may be a trigger to exacerbate sxs.

Doubtful but...: It is not likely, in my opinion, for chronic pain to cause bipolar disorder; though they sometimes do occur in the same person. Taking a serotonin enhancing medicine like Cymbalta (duloxetine) for the chronic pain may, however, trigger a manic episode in someone already inclined toward bipolar disorder. Steroids can also induce mania in some people.
