Mild depression: May have minor impact on quality of life or function. Severe depression has a major impact on the quality of one's life and function (in a number of areas). Bipolar disorder combines periods of depression with episodes of increase energy, elated or irritable mood ; increased impulsivity.

Depression, Bipolar: Mild Depression has feelings of sadness, hurt and upsetness; does not much affect functioning. Severe Depression has marked sadness, with feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, suicidal ideations.
