Essentially the same: A sprain has different degrees of an injury to it. A tear would be the severest form of it and being severe would need more prolonged time to heal or needs repairing surgically.

Yes: Sprain is injury to ligament . Sprain can be graded bad on how badly ligament has bene injured. Grade 1 is mild stretching of ligament. Grade 2 is partial tear of ligament without joint instability. Grade 3 is complete rupture of ligament with joint instability. http://patient.info/health/sprains-and-strains-leaflet
