Emotional detachment: Occurs following traumatic events. It is an attempt to protect one's self from further harm and pain. If you numb your feelings you hope to stop being hurt. However, we all need our feelings so that it does not work in the long run. (this is an extremely simplified explanation, but the best i can do in such limited space).
