What dangers will having a collapsed lung expose?

Depends on: Location and degree. If it is severe, it can progress to pneumonia and scar formation, precluding full expansion in the future. Treatment is different for pneumothorax and atelectasis, so it is best to consult a doctor.

Breathing: Although a collapsed lung can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, it also may cause no symptoms at all. If the lung stays collapsed for a prolonged time, it may form a covering on the surface of the lung, making it unable to expand. This requires surgical repair. A collapsed lung is more prone to pneumonia.
