Maybe: In the nineties a product was widely sold to dentist for the removal of tooth decay. Using air abrasion and/or drilling only on enamel. Most people could be treated without a shot. Once the decay was exposed, it could be washed away with copious amounts of inexpensive solution. The remaining tooth structure could then be bonded and restored with a tooth colored restoration. Didn't work out.
