Ice, Elevation: Ice and elevation would be a first-aid approach. If the pain and swelling does not improve x-rays and/or other diagnostic tests would be helpful to rule out a stress fracture ("march" fracture). Tendonitis, plantar fasciitis are other common conditions that would have to be ruled out. It is also possible to sprain almost any joint in the foot from a bio mechanical fault...May need orthotics.

See a doctor: If you have pain after hiking you may have some underlying pathology causing that pain it is best to be seen and evaluated by a foot specialist soon.
