Bone and space. : The specialty is two things: dental orthopedics ;#40;dealing with the bones;#41; and dental orthodontics ;#40; dealing with tooth position;#41;. Phase 1 deals with the development of space for erupting teeth by manipulation of the bones of the jaws. Space can be "created" by selective removal of baby teeth and/or spreading of the palate or "stretching" of the lower jaw. Phase 1 helps improve phase 2 results.

2 phase treatment: For many children dividing Orthodontic care into 2 phases may be advantageous. Depending on the malocclusion, Phase I Rx may simplify or shorten the 2nd phase, make the post Rx result more stable, enhance airway, provide room for all permanent teeth to erupt, reduce risk of canine impaction, and many other reasons. See a fully qualified Orthodontic Specialist for advice.
