Take it easy: You can put a lot of strain on your neck with weightlifting and it can be a common cause of disc herniation. For weight lifting, try lowering weight, increasing reps and avoiding any exercises with increased flexion or extension of neck. For sit-ups, try doing crunches instead. The hands behind the head with situps can put a great deal of pressure on your neck and cause pain and injury.
