This is serious: This is a serious problem that needs to be regularly followed by a healthcare provider. Surgery is recommended for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) when the aneurysm is large enough (>5.5 cm) because the risk for rupture (often fatal) increases as the size of the AAA increases. An alternative to surgery is stent placement.

Size: Treatment is based on size and symptoms. At less than 5cm, the recomendation is to follow. Therapy includes control of blood pressure, stop smoking, control cholesterol, exercise, etc. If the aneurysm increases in size quickly, surgery or endovascular therapy is indicated. Otherwise, observation, with ultrasound or ct scan at regular intervals.
