Treat Nipples Too: "How to treat thrush on nursing mom?" Oral thrush is common in young infants and is caused by colonization and overgrowth of yeast in baby's mouth. Yeast is harmless if you have a normal immune system. Nursing moms who are treating their baby's mouth for thrush can apply the same medication to their nipples prior to nursing to eliminate yeast colonization of the skin on and around the nipple.
