You can use cool: compresses at the beginning, then switch to warm compresses later in the day. An oral antihistamine would help the most. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) tends to be very effective for this, but it can make you drowsy, so please don't take it before driving or operating machinery. If you will be doing those activities, try one of the non-sedating meds, such as loratidine or fexofenadine.
