Need a monitor: Palpitations for years may be abnormal. If the palpitations are constant, an ekg will often make the diagnosis, but if the palpitations are intermittent, a 24 hour (holter) monitor may be more helpful. Some patients experience significant palpitations with no discernible cardiac arrhythmia. A monitor can also help to diagnose these non-cardiac causes of palpitations, which are generally benign.
