AA does work best: But it's not for everyone. It still is a good idea to take advantage of as many aa components as you can in building a custom treatment. Firm but patient support is really a valuable part as is being open and non-deceptive with at least someone. A physician can prescribe Disulfiram to keep you away from any alcohol. I hear that you want to cut down, not stop and i admire that, but it may not work.

It's possible: Aa does have a long and successful history, for people who actively work the program. There are other programs which have not been around as long, but which do benefit some people. One of these is smart recovery: http://www.Smartrecovery.Org/ you might also look into intensive outpatient programs too. An addiction medicine physician can work with you -- Naltrexone and other options exist.

Alternative programs: The largest alternative to 12-step treatment in the US is SMART recovery, and there are many others. Most treatment programs use evidence-based forms of group and individual therapy, like cognitive behavioral therapies and motivational enhancement therapy, which does not involve 12-step meetings. LifeRing Secular recovery,Women for Sobriety are others. Google or Bing names to get help in your area
