Depends on history: Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the colon, in which the lining becomes inflamed as the result of an abnormal response by your body's immune system producing ulcers, bleeding and scars. Treatment often includes 5-aminosalicylates, steroids, azathioprine, and other immunosuppressants, escalating to biologic agents targeting tnf. In refractory cases, colon removal may be necessary.
