See your doctor: Ulcerative colitis is a serious disease that is treated with many different medicines depending on how severe it is. Mesalamine is one such drug , but there are many including steroids and biologicals as well. This is best decided by your gastroenterologist.

Mesalamine & doctor: You have recent diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and want a medication that will help. Mesealamine is one of the standard medications. Stay in close contact with your doctor. The most important thing to do is let him/her know if you are having symptoms. Inflammation is the enemy. Mesealamine will be used as a maintenance drug.
