Duodenal atresia,...: Or congenital blockage of the duodenum (1st part of the intestine beyond the stomach) can be associated with Down syndrome (trisomy-21) or occur by itself. Surgery is necessary in the first couple of days after birth to open up the duodenum so that the baby can feed and grow.
