See below: If a ct scan shows no kidney stones it is unlikely to be the reason for pain, would look for another cause, a stone in the ureter would show up on a plain x ray or would require a special x ray if there is a strong suspicion.

Renal stones: Occasionally stones located in the kidneys do cause kidney pain chronically.
