Muscle spasm: Shoulder "popping" in a 20 Y.O. Female during range of motion of the shoulder often arises from the region where the levator scapulae muscle inserts upon the superior scapula spine. The inciting event, in my experience, is spasm of the levator muscle due to ineffective effort of the companion superior trapezius muscle to elevate the ipsilateral (same side of body) shoulder hemi-girdle.
