Many causes: Including central heating without enough humidity. But also hydration, underlying medical conditions that cause dry eye, medications. Consider an eye md visit if you are worried.

Possible Sjogrens: Dry eyes can occur with age but an autoimmune condition known as sjogren's syndrome is another cause. See an ophthalmologist. There are effective treatments available whatever the cause.

Dry eye syndrome: Adequate tears are necessary to lubricate the top layer of the cornea, the clear dome over the fron of your eye and the conjunctiva, the "skin" over your eye ball. When they are insufficient, small defects can occur in the top layer, exposung nerves underneath- and this causes discomfort, sandy or gritty feeling and pain.
