Live healthy ;: Strive happiness. Talk about feelings ; address problems. Don't avoid them. Aim for 7.5 - 8 hours of sleep/ night. Daily physical activity is optimal in a green space. Eat healthfully. Cut out junk carbs, caffeine ; alcohol (or moderate). Try activities such as qi gong, tai chi, acupuncture, acupressure, meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation. Socialize.

Avoiding Dep: This is a great question. As many as 17 adults (maybe more) in 100 will experience depression sometime in their lives. So bravo for asking. The previous doctors answer covers all the critical bases, just use that list. If you start to worry about depression, check back and see what part of that list you might need to improve upon. Best of luck.

It's serious work: Dr. Fowler has given you very good advice. If you are trapped in an abusive or confusing or impossible life situation, get out by whatever means, and get help escaping. Become familiar with common cognitive distortions, especially the tendency to catastrophize and to minimize positives / maximize negatives. Examine dysfunctional thoughts critically. To be brave, act brave. Ask about Rx.
