Incarceration: I think what you are referring to is an umbilical (navel) hernia in which a piece of small bowel gets stuck in the defect (incarceration), this can lead to impairment of the blood supply to that part of the bowel (strangulation) and it can die. This can happen with any hernia of the abdominal wall. While this happens and need to be looked out for, it doesn't make routine hernias am emergency.
