Partial tear: Sprains are graded one, two, or three. Grade one is a stretching of the ligament essentially with retained stability. Grade two is a partial tear of the ligament with some loss of support allowing the joint to open up to a degree but with a distinct end point. Grade three is a complete tear of the ligament with loss of stability.
