Good question: Need not be. I guess drug company profits. However, a generic prenatal with Folic Acid and dha should also suffice.

Drug company profits: Pharmaceutical companies tend to charge a lot of money for their products. There is absolutely no advantage to taking a prescription prenatal vs. An over-the-counter, in fact many non-prescription ones are superior. Excellent brands like new chapter, designs for health ; rainbow light cost $20-30 a month but less expensive yet adequate brands are available.
