A member asked:

Will abilify (aripiprazole) cause insomnia if i take it? i thinking of making the switch over from zyprexa because of weight gain. does it also cause akathisia?

Possibly: Although zyprexa is more notorious for causing weight gain than abilify, (aripiprazole) the switch might not provide much relief from this adverse effect. Abilify (aripiprazole) can cause increased appetite and weight gain, too. Abilify (aripiprazole) is as likely to cause sedation and drowsiness as it is to cause insomnia. I cannot predict the predominant effect which may prevail if you take it. Akathisia may result from Abilify (aripiprazole) as well.

Not usually: Any drug can have unusual effect on somebody -if anything Abilify (aripiprazole) usually causes drowsiness and most prefer to take it at bed time. All the major tranquilizers can cause akathisia. Discuss this with your your prescribing doc.
