Ivc filter: Ivc filters are now removable. During removal the risks include bleeding, dislodgement of clot or embolism and infection. Death is a risk from any procedure. The new technology of a removable ivc filter allows it to be removed after the risk of massive pulmonary embolism is over. The rate of complications are related to the patients current condition and the condition of the stent.

It depends: To be more specific the there are general risks related to venography and risks particular to each filter. The risks often change with the duration of which particular filter you have. Meaning tilting, filter migration, strut fracture or penetration, are often different devices. Please check with your endovascular specialist who placed the device and they can more specifically detail your risks.

Rarely: Retrievable filters (most of the recently placed ones) usually come out with little problems. We check to see if they clot caught in them before removing them. More difficult ones can be removed with advanced techniques or with a laser-sheath. This is almost always an outpatient procedure done with IV sedation.
