Why do some patients need to be hospitalized after getting a ureteroscopy?

Depends: The urologist will be able to explain to you. Sometimes concern for bleeding or need to treat with IV hydration or IV antibiotics may warrant hospital observation.

Many reasons: Ureteroscopy can cause post procedure pain, ureteral spasms and some patients have an infection which requires IV antibiotics.
