Uric acid and gout: Although at least two-thirds of patients with hyperuricemia will remain without symptoms, gout can develop in these patients at any point. Risk factors for progression of hyperuricemia to acute gouty arthritis (which can involve the ankles and feet) include increased alcohol consumption, significant meat and seafood ingestion, diuretic use (especially thiazides), hypertension, and obesity.
