A member asked:

I had spontaneous pneumomediastinum. my ct scan noted "minimal interlobular septal thickening @ lung apices consistent w/pulmonary congestion". what does that mean and did the sp cause it?

Pneumo: The usual cause of a pneumomediatstinum is an air leak from the lungs. The most common cause is a bleb, a balloon like structure that forms just beneath the surface of the lungs that ruptures.

Spontaneous pneumo-: Mediastinum by itself is benign and resolves on its own, as opposed to pneumothorax which can be dangerous. Sp can be caused by activities that rasie pressure in the airway, such as in trumpet players or extensive coughing. The septal thickening is most commonly seen with fluid in the lung/pulmonary edema, which wouldnt itself cause sp unless it made you cough a lot.
