Biopsy first: Under most circumstances, a biopsy confirming cancer is usually performed prior to a procedure to remove a suspected breast cancer. Also, in most cases, a lumpectomy, rather than a mastectomy, can be safely performed to remove breast cancer. However, breast radiation needs to be administered after a lumpectomy.
