Vasomotor symptoms: Hot flushes result in the perimenopausal or menopausal woman due to thermoregulatory dysfunction. Peripheral dilation of blood vessels occurs with rapid heat dissipation. Core body temperature falls, and then shivering results to restore core temperature to normal. The first-line therapy for intolerable symptoms is estrogen for 2-3 years. Ssris and Gabapentin are possible alternatives.
