Acute vs. chronic: The most effective analgesics currently available are the opioids (narcotic). Their efficacy in acute pain is also well established. Most of the debate about the role of opioids in chronic pain is based the safety, efficacy and the potential for abuse. The concerns are tolerance, physical dependence and addiction, many physicians are still reluctant to prescribe opioids for chronic pain.
