Withdrawal: Yes. Of course you do. But, you can get off of this drug. It is not as bad as heroin and those individuals suffering from that addiction make it as well. But, you need to be detoxed under medical supervision so that your withdrawal symptoms can be managed. Drug and alcohol programs are very well aware of the benzodiazepine addiction and how to get sober.

Slow taper: You've become addicted, which you already know. First, it's important to know that withdrawal from benzodiazepines is not 'deadly'; it's just very unpleasant. With the help of a psychiatrist, you can get off this medication, but it can take time, with very gradual dose tapering. Sometimes we substitute diazepam (valium), because it has a long half-life and comes in small dose sizes.

Alprazolam: Being on Alprazolam for over 10 years means you are seriously habituated -- and will need very gradual tapering in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms. When you "miss" for 48 hours, it's not unusual that you would have difficulty. Please work with your physician on tapering your medication, and don't try to do it all by yourself. Best wishes.
