Common problem: Cover it with a light gauze bandage; if he can't get to it, he'll stop picking it, and it will heal.

We are all pickers : Well, it probably won't heal because the picking isn't allowing it to heal. That is always a difficult thing to stop as we all will pick at things on our skin. Some of us have more trouble stopping than others. First, get the rash evaluated.
