It Is Prescribed: And Paxil (paroxetine) is an excellent drug with many indications for anxiety disorders that the newer drugs did not obtain. However, it is a generic ssri with significant sexual se, weight gain and withdrawal so it is not used in alot of practices as a first line drug. Also, alot have patients have been already on it and they "pooped out." this can occur with all of the meds.

Not a 1st choice: Paxil (paroxetine) (paroxetene) is in the family of medications called ssris. I do not use it as my first choice in that class due to its side effect profile. This can include a higher incidence of weight gain, sexual dysfunction as well as more side effects at the time of discontinuation.
