Cause is NOT known: Type ii diabetes has a strong genetic component, but not so much for type1. The exact cause is unknown but believed to be an autoimmune process (body attacks itself). If mom has type 1, child has 3% chance; if father has it, then kid has about 6% of developing it, comparing to type2 of about 25+%, up to 50% if both parents have diabetes. Best bet is keep healthy! good luck and happy new year.
