Differs btwn states.: Usually, there is no licensing for dental and orthodontic assistants, so normally there is no education requirement. However, many states have "licensed" or "certified" assistants who can perform a wider range of tasks. Call your local dental society for more information.

Dental Ass't Program: Becoming an orthodontic assitant requires a dental assitant school certificate. Hopefully, you get experience in orthodontic proceedures. In many instances, you can gain more experience by working in an orthodontic office as an intern. I know i enjoy training dental assistants in orthodontics in my own office.

None, actually: While some will go to dental assisting school, to be honest, i see this as a waste of time and money. We have many of our assistants that we will train with no experience. In 3 months with us they are able to do more and do it better than people with a year of dental assisting. I'd save the tuition, and find a practice that will let you intern with them for 2-3 months. Then they can hire you!

Training: Most Orthodontists want to see at least a high school diploma. Trade school training as a Dental Assistant useful but not mandatory. Many (if not most) Orthodontists train their own assistants in their offices. They're looking for bright personality, little or no body art, clean appearance, willingness to learn/to be challenged/to like kids. Talk to the Orthodontists in your area for more info

Dental assistant: If you are interested in becoming an orthodontic assistant, the training is typically very similar to that of dental assistants.
