Tough question: Often, tmj/tmd can occur with even minor functions, like a wide yawn. You should be proactive. If you have been told that you grind or clench your teeth, if you have missing teeth, bite your fingernails, a crooked or bad bite, chew on one side only, chew hard, sticky foods, etc. See what i mean. Trauma can also cause tmj. Just be on top of things, see your dentist regularly and do research.

See a dentist: Missing molars have been associated with TMJ problems. Getting them replaced may offer TMJ relief. Please see a dentist with experience at caring for TMJ issues. Seeking one online with favorable reviews may help if you do not have one.

Need Rx: When a molar is lost the surrounding and opposing teeth begin tipping and drifting into the extraction site. This "posterior.Bite collapse" allows interferences during chewing and swallowing. This malocclusion may cause joint dysfunction. Please ask your dentist if an orthodontic consultation is in order.
