See family doc: Please see your family doctor first. Have any physical cause for depression ruled out. Get a referral to a competent psychiatrist and a psychotherapist who specializes in people who self harm. They should also be able to refer you to a support group for people who self harm. I have had excellent success with hydroxyzine, which is a medication used to treat itching and an anti-histaminethat has a calming effect for anxiety. It also greatly decreases the urge to self harm so that the frequency and severity of the self harm events is far less. It does not knock out the thoughts but it does greatly diminish the urge. Best wishes for a happy and safe holiday season.
