Stress and G6PD def: If someone has g6pd deficiency, their red blood cells are less able to recover from the stress of loading and unloading oxgen, which is the job of the red blood cell. Infection can add additional stress (we call it oxidative stress). Someone with moderate or severe g6pd deficiency may have increased red blood cell breakdown (hemolysis) with oxidative stress like certain infections.
