Have it checked: Jaw popping is often from a joint's disc (a round cushion for the jaw bones) being slipping in and out of its space. Sometimes, it goes out of correct position from slipping and gets stuck in its inappropriate position. This can cause significant pain, or your jaw may get locked. Avoid anything that hurts you, be on a soft diet, take allowable pain meds, and see a dentist soon for a diagnosis.

Possibly...: Several types/ issues of clicking jaw... One is an anatomical issue related to opening too wide (like a snake), another related to slipping discs (like in one's back/spine)... Joint is likely inflamed... Soft diet, no opening wide, NSAID medications such as mobic, (meloxicam) alternating hot/cold compress and facial massage are a good start. Seek advice from someone who likes to treat TMJ disorders.

Yes: The long term popping suggests chronic but asymptomatic disk displacement. Your jaw will probably settle down with soft diet, NSAID. If not, see a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
