Pain is Pain: If it hurts it is pain. Cramping is just a form of pain and therefore a form of pelvic pain. Cramping with your period is also called dysmenorrhea, but it is still pain. Pelvic pain more often refers to pain that occurs at times other than your menses.

Sometimes yes: You can develop cramping at the beginning of a normal menstrual cycle; most women know what this feels like. Pelvic pain may be a sign of something more severe: possibly an infection, or even something dangerous like an ectopic pregnancy. If you are having severe pelvic pain, you should see your doctor, particularly if you are having fever or bleeding with the pain. Don't wait!
