I have hypothyroidism - does that mean i'm more likely to get thyroid cancer?

Not usually: Hypothyroidism just means your thyroid gland is not making as much hormone as it should. However, hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause -- and it does have an associated increased risk for developing a thyroid gland lymphoma -- but it is still very uncommon.

If your hypothyroid: Condition is treated, it tends to diminish the stimulating hormone that makes thyroid tissue grow (tsh). Most throid cancers start as nodules, cold > hot, and hormonal activity of the gland is not related to malignancy potential.

Hypothyroidism: Patients with thyroid nodules and hypothyroidism are less likely to have thyroid cancer than those with normal thyroid function. The most common cause of hypothyroidism in a patient with a nodule is (hashimoto's) thyroiditis.
