Inflammation..: Your gums appear to be inflamed. Why is hard to tell over the internet. Plaque, calculus, and pocketing can all be the cause. Certain meds can cause inflammation, too. Have a consult with a local dentist to determine what is wrong.

You're right: Bleeding gums is a sign of gum infection. Gum disease is insidious, as it is very slowly progressive and doesn't hurt at first. Your problem is just one of the many reasons that you should see a dentist regularly, but not less than twice a year. Please go now before it gets worse. There's no diy fix for this, you need to see your dentist now. He/she may want to refer you on to a periodontist.

Are you sure?: When you say "no previous dental problems" I suspect you mean that you were aware of. One thing about dentistry that seems to surprise many people is that when we do exams and recommend treatment on teeth or gums that have no symptoms, we are seeing problems long before you become aware of them. Once your gums are oozing blood, they have progressed in their level of disease. Get an exam ASAP!
