Nice gesture?: I"m not a psychiatrist, but if a patient gives me a simple present, i consider it a very thoughtful gesture and don't look too deeply into it.

It's up to you: If the psychiatrist sees you for psychotherapy, he/she should invite you to reflect on the meaning of giving the gift, thus using it to further your treatment. Usually gifts of value are politely declined, while inexpensive or symbolic gifts (eg, a handmade card) are often accepted. Same goes for a "meds" treatment, but without the exploration. It's certainly appropriate not to give a gift!
